The Liz Earle Men’s Skincare Guide

Of all the differences between men and women, our skincare routines may be one of the most glaringly obvious. Which isn’t surprising when you consider how different men’s and women’s skin can be. For a start, male skin is around 25% thicker than female, and due to higher levels of hormones like testosterone, produces more oil and more facial hair.

Rule 1: Cleansing is key

If you do nothing else, wash your face every morning and evening. Effective cleansing is the key to healthy-looking skin, especially if you have oily skin, large pores or are prone to breakouts. In the morning this could be as simple as a quick wash in the shower, but by the end of the day you’ll probably need to upgrade, especially if you work outdoors or commute on public transport. To swiftly and easily remove daily grime, excess oil and pollution particles try a creamy, botanical-based cleanser like our Men’s Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser. Massage onto dry skin over your entire face and neck, then soak the cotton cloth in hand-hot water before polishing off the cream to reveal clean, comfortable and refreshed skin. For more cleansing tips see our Men’s Cleansing 101.

Rule 2: Maintain your moisture

While dry skin is a genetic ‘skin type’, anyone can suffer from dehydrated skin, even if you’re prone to oiliness or have combination skin. If your face feels tight or irritated after cleansing, your skin’s natural barrier may be damaged which means it could be losing water more rapidly that it should be. Regular gentle cleansing followed by our hydrating, aloe-rich Instant Boost™ Skin Tonic and a plant-based moisturiser – preferably twice daily – can help to support skin’s natural resilience. Try our easily absorbed Men’s After-Shaving Moisturiser or your choice of Skin Repair™ Moisturiser, both contain moisturising borage and avocado oils to leave skin feeling smooth and comfortable. For full protection, especially from spring to late autumn, use a mineral SPF on top of your facial moisturiser if you’re going to be spending any amount of time outdoors.

Rule 3: Be a savvy shaver

Whether you’re clean shaven or neatening up a full beard, shaving can irritate sensitive skin and make it feel tight. Shaving with poor technique and a lack of preparation can also lead to unsightly ingrown hairs or redness. For a close, clean shave massage Sensitive Shave Cream into damp skin to create a rich lather, then shave in the direction of hair growth to help avoid ingrown hairs. It’s formulated with soothing shave grass and purifying eucalyptus to limit irritation. If you have a few extra minutes beforehand, soak a towelling cloth in hand-hot water, wring out and place over your stubble, pressing into all the contours of your face. Leaving this on for 30 seconds helps expand the hairs, allowing for a closer shave – think traditional barbershop style. Follow with our Men’s After-Shaving Moisturiser to calm and soothe. Rule 4: Smooth and brighten your skin

It’s a biological fact that men’s skin is thicker than women’s so the texture can feel tougher too. If your face feels rough, or you suffer with dry skin, a non-scratchy face scrub like our Gentle Face Exfoliator* used twice a week can help. After cleansing, massage onto your face and neck concentrating on the forehead, nose (goodbye blackheads), chin and jawline to buff away dead skin cells and impurities. Work around your thickest facial hair, but feel free to buff into your stubble where dead or dry skin may accumulate. If your skin also looks dull, smooth our Brightening Treatment Mask* onto clean (but not freshly shaven) skin and leave for around 30 seconds – 2 minutes for the fast-acting botanicals to get to work and boost your natural glow. To remove, simply wipe away with a cotton cloth soaked in hand hot water. Keep this to hand for a fast skin pick-me-up before a big event or night out.

Rule 5: Your body is a temple

While your main focus is probably above the neck, don’t neglect the skin on your body, especially as a summer holiday of beach breaks looms. Choose your body wash carefully to limit any drying effects. Our Men’s Face & Body Wash is made with only naturally derived foaming agents that cleanse without stripping the skin (so it’s also gentle enough to use on your face too, see Rule 1, above). It’s also infused with a fragrance blend containing pure essential oils of bergamot and patchouli to enliven and invigorate your morning shower. NB. It’s a running joke in our office that women often swipe this from their partner’s bathroom shelves because they love the scent so much, so keep an eye on your stash!

Did you know?

While men’s skin may be thicker than women’s, it also contains a greater density of collagen which helps keep it looking youthful for longer.
