How to Workout in Winter

Pounding the pavement sounds like a daunting prospect after the indulgent festive period, and cosying up in front of the fire is all too tempting. Blissful though it may seem, staying cooped up often isn’t the wisest move for improving feelings of wellbeing. Balance is key, and that means calmness and relaxation need to be offset with movement and fresh air. So, with that in mind, here are our top tips to help you stay in shape and feel wonderful.

Play music for motivation
Does hearing your alarm on a dark and damp morning send a wave of anxiety through you? Sounds, and in particular, music, can have a seismic effect on how you feel for the rest of the day. If you find that being woken up by a loud alarm tends to set you up for a bad day, then switch it to an upbeat song that will perk you up when you hear it. Once you’re up, keep a playlist going with similar songs so that you feel energised enough to do some exercise, whether it’s a run around the local park or fitness DVD in the living room. Working out first thing also means you don’t have to psych yourself up to do it in the evening, leaving you to focus on the rest of your day.

Adopt a sense of seasonality
Think of exercise in the same way you think of your wardrobe and how you have to switch it up each season. If the thought of bracing the frost puts you off running, then find new ways to raise your heart rate such as a dance class. It’s the perfect opportunity to try something new, while still getting some cardio in the bag. Be sure to cherry-pick your favourite instructors and classes – they will help to keep you motivated and the variations will ensure you don’t get bored.

Make it a family affair
Teaming up with a friend or family member helps to make exercising that little bit easier as it’s more sociable and makes the time pass faster. You’re also much more likely to take part because you won’t want to let anybody down. When it comes to group activities, think outside the box so that the exercise works for everyone. Rather than walking or running, investigate local events such as ice-skating or sledging as personal ability won’t affect the fun factor.

Getting into a positive fitness routine can really help to keep your momentum up, yet if your weeks tend to vary, it can be hard to maintain. Having a back up plan is a great way to ensure you stay on the exercise wagon when things get hectic. If you’re travelling, then having fitness app and videos on your phone can really help to ensure you get that workout in. With so many to choose from it’s just like being in a class, and you’ll still be able to experience that same satisfying endorphin high.

Create positive associations
One of the most effective ways to stay motivated in winter is to change the way you think. Start by being kind to yourself and creating balance. If you’ve promised yourself you’re going to stay fit, and then find yourself skipping sessions with excuses like: ‘It’s too much hard work’ or ‘I hate doing it’, then you’re viewing exercise as a punishment rather than seeing it as a way to nurture your health. Exercising can have such far-reaching benefits that it’s so beneficial to be able to create positive associations with fitness. Not sure how? After a session, write down all the ways it made you feel good and what you enjoyed most about it. Then, each time you start to feel that exercise is becoming a chore, refer back to your list!
